Leonid Hryhorowytsch Kossakivskyj (born January 21, 1950 in Chernivtsi , Vinnytsia Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian politician and was the first official mayor of the Ukrainian capital Kiev after the independence of Ukraine.

Life

Kosakivskyi was born in Chernivtsi village in Mohyliv-Podilskyi district (now an urban-type settlement in Chernivtsi district) in Vinnytsia Oblast, Ukraine. He studied at the Radiophysical Faculty of the National Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev until 1973 and served in the Red Army between 1973 and 1975 . From 1975 to 1980 he was an engineer and designer at the Kiev Arsenal plant .

From 1980 to 1988 Kossakivskyi was head of department of the Communist Party in the Kiev town of Pechersk district and between 1988 and 1991 he was first second and then first party secretary of the district committee of the Communist Party in Pechersk district. From April 1993 to July 1994 he was Deputy President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk in Kiev. Subsequently, from July 1994 to June 1997, Kossakivskyj was chairman of the Kiev City Council and from July 1995 to July 1996 he headed the Kiev city administration. From June 1997 to April 1998 he was the city's first mayor after Ukraine gained independence. Between May 1998 and May 2002 Leonid Kossakivskyj was a member of the All-Ukrainian Association "Fatherland", a member of the Verkhovna Rada , the Ukrainian parliament. After his political career he works as an independent expert.

He is married to Iryna Wassyliwna Kossakiwska (* 1952) and has a son named Serhij (* 1974).
