Leopold Bendix (born September 16, 1818 in Berlin ; † March 16, 1883 ibid) was a German history , genre and portrait painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

The garnishment , 1847

Leopold Bendix, son of the clothes dealer Bendix Joseph Elkisch (1775 or 1777–1864) and his wife Hendel, née Burg (1786–1865), came from a Jewish merchant family in Berlin that did not adopt the name Bendix as a family name until 1842/1843. In 1834 he became a student in Wilhelm Herbig's studio in Berlin. From 1835 to 1839 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Theodor Hildebrandt . In the years 1841/1842 he stayed in Paris , where he was a student in Paul Delaroche's studio . From 1871 he was a member of the Association of Berlin Artists . He was married but probably childless. His grave is preserved in the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee next to that of his wife Caroline, née Wernicke.

activity

Bendix initially created compositions on biblical and historical events, but changed about 1840 increasingly the " narrative painting " within the Düsseldorf School of Painting by operating outside the mainstream group to which about Carl Hübner , Rudolf Jordan or Henry Ritter was included, represented . Socio-critical issues, such as in the painting “Die Auspfändung” from 1847, were stimulated by corresponding tendencies in works by the Düsseldorf painters Peter Schwingen and Johann Peter Hasenclever . In the Berlin criticism, they were accordingly devalued as " tendency painting ". Since the 1840s numerous portraits have also been created. Between 1834 and 1870 he took part regularly in the Berlin Academy exhibition and was often represented in exhibitions at the art associations in Düsseldorf ( art association for the Rhineland and Westphalia ), Königsberg and Breslau, and in 1869 also in the Munich international annual exhibition.
