Leopold König (born November 15, 1987 in Moravská Třebová ) is a former Czech cyclist .

Career

Leopold König began his career in 2006 with the Czech Continental Team PSK Whirlpool-Hradec Králové . In his first season he finished third at the Grand Prix Příbram . He also started at the road cycling world championships in Salzburg , where he was 39th in the U23 road race.

For the 2011 season he switched to the German team NetApp , the later team Bora-hansgrohe . In the first season for his new team, he took second place in the Tour of Austria and third place overall in the Tour de l'Ain . He celebrated his greatest success to date on August 31, 2013, when he won the 8th stage of the Vuelta a España 2013 . He finished the Tour of Spain in 2013 in ninth place and seventh in the 2014 Tour de France .

For the 2015 season, König joined Team Sky . In May 2015 he reached sixth place in the Giro d'Italia . In 2016 he was ranked 26th in the overall ranking of the Vuelta a España and was also the Czech champion in the individual time trial .

In March 2018, König contested his last race for the time being. In September 2018, the Bora-hansgrohe team - to which he had returned in 2017 - announced that he was ill and therefore could not start in races for the time being. In 2020 it was initially unclear whether he would be active again as a racing driver. In March 2020, Leopold König became the new sports director of the Czech Cycling Tour and the U23 edition of the International Peace Ride .
