from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leopoldo Joaquim († 1979 ) was an East Timorese freedom fighter.

Joaquim was a member of the Central Committee (CCF) of FRETILIN , the party that proclaimed the independence of East Timor from Portugal on November 28, 1975 . But just nine days later, Indonesia occupied the country. The FRETILIN went into armed struggle against the invaders.

At the beginning of 1978, Joaquim surrendered and surrendered to the Indonesian security forces in Same . Indonesia used Joaquim's surrender for propaganda. Leaflets with his photo were distributed to get other FRETILIN members to give up. Joaquim was detained in the infamous San Tai Ho warehouse for several months before he was released. But only shortly afterwards, in April 1979, Joaquim was taken from his house by Indonesian soldiers. Then they drove to the home of his niece, 17-year-old Maria Gorete Joaquim, who had been temporarily imprisoned as a member of the FRETILIN student movement UNETIM in 1976. Leopoldo and Maria Gorete Joaquim were then taken away, supposedly to work in Baucaubut were never seen again. Unconfirmed reports reported their execution.

In 2015, documents emerged at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta , suggesting that Australia had received from Indonesia a list of FRETILIN leaders who were the target of the Indonesian security forces in the 1975 invasion. Among the 19 people on the list is Leopold Joaquim. The Steps to Prevent Communist Agitators to Escape list had been presented to the Australian embassy three months before the invasion.
