Leopoldo Nóvoa (1995)

Leopoldo Nóvoa García (born December 17, 1919 in Salcedo , Pontevedra , Spain , † February 23, 2012 in Nogent-sur-Marne , France ) was a Spanish-Uruguayan artist.

Leopoldo Nóvoa was born in Pontevedra, Spain, to a Uruguayan diplomat and a Gaulish woman. He was a citizen of Uruguay. He grew up in Spain until 1938, but then moved to Uruguay. There he settled in Montevideo , but also lived for some time in Buenos Aires . In the course of his artistic career, Nóvoa appeared in particular as a painter and exhibited worldwide. After he had already participated in various group exhibitions in the Argentine capital from 1953 to 1956 and had also carried out solo exhibitions, his first solo exhibition in Uruguay was in 1958. It took place in the Galería Moretti . Between 1962 and 1964 he created the 600 m² wall painting of the Estadio Luis Tróccoli , which serves as the home ground of the Montevidean football club Club Atlético Cerro . It is considered to be the world's largest abstract mural. Murals in Termas del Arapey were also made by Nóvoa. In 1965 he moved to Paris , before he moved to Armenteira in Galicia after democracy had solidified in Spain and from then on lived alternately there and in the French capital. In 1997 he received the Premio Ciudad de Pontevedra . The information about his place of death are contradicting. On the one hand, Nogent-sur-Marne or Paris is mentioned in this context , other sources name Uruguay.
