Lepidozamia is a genus of cycads (Cycadales). The genus name is derived from the Greek lepidos ("scaly") and refers to the scaly leaf bases that cover the trunk. Both species are listed in Appendix II of the Washington Convention on the Protection of Species (CITES).

features

The trunks are tree-shaped, mostly unbranched. Lepidozamia hopei forms the highest known cycads at 17.5 m. The leaf bases are retained and form a regular pattern with the cataphylls on the trunk.

Lepidozamia hopei

The leaves are simply pinnate, curved, glossy dark to medium green, unarmed. The leaflets are sickle-shaped and hang slightly. They have entire margins, are somewhat reduced towards the base and tip of the leaf, but are never thorny.

The female cones are solitary, egg-shaped, upright, almost sessile and have short brown hairs. The outward-facing side of the sporophyll is curved, the tip often turned upwards. A sharp thorn as in Macrozamia is missing. The seeds are large, usually two per sporophyll, rarely three. The male cones are solitary, elliptical, almost sitting and upright until the pollen is scattered, then lying down. The entire surface is densely hairy light brown.

The chromosome number is 2n = 18.

Distribution and locations

The genus is endemic to Australia and occurs in the tropical and subtropical coastal areas of Queensland and northern New South Wales . Here they grow in the wet sclerophyll forest or in the rainforest from sea level to 615 m above sea level.

Systematics

The genus was first described by Eduard August von Regel in 1857 and, together with the also Australian genus Macrozamia and the African Encephalartos, forms the tribe Encephalarteae within the family Zamiaceae .

There are two known species in the genus:

  • Lepidozamia hopei (W. Hill) rule : It occurs in northeastern Queensland.
  • Lepidozamia peroffskyana rule : It occurs from southeastern Queensland to northeastern New South Wales.
