The beetles are colored black and have partially or completely yellow brown colored wing covers . They differ from the similar genus Xantholinus by four stronger longitudinal furrows on the front edge of the head and their small, curved last link of the jaw palpable . The antennae and legs are rust-colored or brown. It is difficult to distinguish the individual species of the genus from one another on the basis of external characteristics and a genital examination must be used for a reliable determination .

The larvae differ from those of the similar genus by a shorter basal segment of the cerci .
