Leptocereus weingartianus is a species of plant in the genus Leptocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet weingartianus honors the German industrialist and amateur botanist Wilhelm Weingart .

description

Leptocereus weingartianus has a shrubby growth with creeping to spreading shoots. The uppermost shoot segments reach a diameter of 1 to 2 centimeters. There are four to seven slender ribs that are not notched . The needle-like thorns are yellow to reddish brown. The up to six strong central spines are up to 1.5 centimeters long. The up to ten to twelve radial spines are spread out.

The bright pink flowers are up to 4 inches long. The up to 2 centimeters long fruits are covered with decrepit, thorny areoles .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Leptocereus weingartianus is common in the Dominican Republic and Haiti .

It was first described in 1904 by Emmanuel Hartmann . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1920 in the genus Leptocereus .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
