Les Rallizes Dénudés ( jap. 裸のラリーズ , Hadaka no Rarīzu for Rallizes ) was an influential, albeit very reclusive Japanese avant - rock band . They originally started out as a music theater troupe in 1962 , before coming together as a band in 1967.

They were known for their relationships with avant-garde theater groups (such as those embodied by Shuji Terayama's troupe) and for their extreme live shows. The band Velvet Underground is one of their strongest musical influences . The style of the band was of simple, repetitive bass lines, screaming guitar feedback and Folk - Arrangements coined. The band has also identified with radical left-wing political goals and was involved in demonstrations against the Vietnam War and in the occupation of Kyoto University in 1969. In 1970, the band's original bass player, Moriaki Wakabayashi, was involved in the hijacking of a Japanese plane by the Japanese Red Army . The singer Takashi Mizutani was also offered to participate, but this declined.

The band made their last appearance in October 1996.

reception

If the band is perceived by many as one of the most influential Japanese psychedelic bands, Piero Scaruffi describes their music as "superfluous" and an "incompetent imitation of Velvet Underground".
