Live and act

He is currently Professor of the Center for Psychotherapy Research at York University in Toronto, Canada. In 2012, Greenberg received the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Applied Research , the highest award for applied research.

In addition to his work on the effectiveness of process-experience-oriented / emotion-focused therapy, the effectiveness of which he was able to prove, he published numerous papers in the field of psychotherapy process research. Greenberg published over 100 writings. His work, especially on the effectiveness of psychotherapy, is of importance for humanistic psychotherapies , especially gestalt therapy and client- centered talk therapy , as he and his colleagues provided evidence of the effectiveness of these forms of therapy in his empirical evaluation studies. In his investigations, the entire group of humanistic psychotherapy was tied with behavioral therapy in terms of the size of the effects.

At the heart of emotion-focused therapy is the integration of “leading” and “following” in the work of the therapist. Emotion-focused therapy is based on the fundamentals of emotion theory and is based on the latest findings in emotion research and psychotherapy research. It offers fundamental principles for working with emotions in psychotherapy beyond the boundaries of therapy schools. In developing this form of therapy, he took over and combined parts of client-centered talk therapy and gestalt therapy.

1989/1990 he was President of the Society for Psychotherapy Research . Greenberg is a member of the scientific advisory board of the German umbrella organization Gestalt therapy for licensed psychotherapists (DDGAP).
