Lessudden House

Lessudden House is a mansion in the Scottish village of St Boswells in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

A defense structure was previously located on the site. This was razed by troops of the Earl of Hertford in 1545 as part of Rough Wooing . Shortly afterwards, the main parts of today's Lessudden House were built. The manor house was first mentioned in 1548. At that time, a defensive wall enclosed the property, which was demolished in 1780. The Scotts of Raeburn acquired Lessudden House in 1664 and used it as their ancestral home. In 1685 the Scotts modernized and expanded the property. A pigeon tower also comes from this construction phase . Two sundials were added in 1706 and 1739 respectively. Walter Scott , the great-grandfather of the writer of the same name, lived at Lessudden House . With another family member of the same name, the line died out in 1935. His widow died in 1969.

description

Lessudden House is on the right bank of the Tweed on the northeast edge of St Boswells. The part of the building, built in the 16th century, forms the essential part of Lessudden House. In addition to revisions and minor additions over the centuries, a grand piano was added in the 17th century. The design of the interior comes to a large extent from the same century. A coat of arms plate with the clan coat of arms of the Scotts shows the year of construction 1666. The recently added entrance area protrudes near the plate. The masonry of the three-story building with a loft is plastered. Next to a semicircular stair tower on the north side rises up an unusually massive chimney.
