action
An old teacher writes to her former student Thomas Dugan, who now serves as a sergeant at the front. The second week of a new school year has just started and the teacher describes the new students and everyday life in the small town of Monroe, which is little influenced by the war. There is a small Junior Victory Garden and of course news in the newspaper, also about a heroic day of Dugans (the newspaper articles shown show that he saved 40 wounded people), who has become a role model in the small town. The teacher describes how she went to see his mother with Thomas' friend Amy after she received a package from overseas. In the package was the Silver Star , Thomas' award for his heroism. Amy was proud and the father was moved. The whole family has set up a table of honor for Thomas in their apartment, on which are also the newspaper clippings that report on his heroic deed. More news will follow. Thomas' father bought a milking machine for the numerous cows. Amy works as an organist at the local choir rehearsal , while later playing swing at the freshman dance. The teacher also reports on a parade and the unveiling of the Monroe Honor Roll, on which Thomas' name can also be read. She concludes her letter by saying that all things at the front may seem trivial to him, but that this is America.
