The Heidkate beacon is located in Heidkate on the Baltic Sea coast between the Kiel Fjord and the Hohwacht Bay in the Kolberger Heide, north of Wendtorf . It serves as a warning fire and shows the closing times for the target practice areas in Putlos and Todendorf .
It shows a green signal when shooting in Todendorf, when shooting in Putlos it shows a red, each with an interval of 5 seconds. When shooting in both exercise areas, it alternately shows the red and green signals. The lighthouse, with the towers in Hubertsberg , Neuland , Wessek, Blankeck and Heiligenhafen, is one of a series of lighthouses on Schleswig-Holstein's Baltic coast that are used to secure the restricted area.
The Federal Office for Radiation Protection installed an ODL probe on the property of the lighthouse to monitor the environmental radioactivity . It is used for radioactive early warning.
