The Eierland lighthouse is a lighthouse on the northern tip of the Dutch island of Texel . It got its name from the former island Eierland , which today belongs to Texel after land reclamation measures.

history

In 1835, Dutch coastal planners began to dike the wadden area between the islands of Texel and Eierland. After this work was completed, the formerly independent island Eierland became part of the much larger island of Texel. Due to the enormous land gain, new shipping signs were required . The state government approved the construction of a lighthouse on the new northern tip of Texel. The architect Quirinus Harder , who also laid the foundation stone of the new tower on a 20 meter high dune on July 25, 1863 , received the contract for the planning . The red-painted tower was put into operation on November 1st, 1864 . The distance between the lighthouse and the coast at that time was 3000 meters.

The tower was operated with petroleum burners from 1864 to 1910 , before these were replaced by Pharoline burners in 1910 . The Eierland lighthouse was finally electrified in 1927.

During the Georgian uprising in April 1945, the tower was badly damaged, so that it subsequently had to be considerably renovated. A new outer wall was built and the interior was extensively renovated. In 1977 the tower was finally given a red plastic coating. The tower has been open to the public since 2009 and can be climbed up to the 6th floor. The beacon and the lighthouse keeper's office are not accessible. At the height of the 5th floor there is a tour between the old and the new outer wall. Bullet holes are visible here.

Light character

The beacon of the Eierland lighthouse reaches a light intensity of 2,850,000 candela and is visible 29 nautical miles . The optics generate two short flashes of light per 10-second interval; the dominant light color is white. This results in the following identifier : FL (2) W 10s .
