Lev winter

Lev Winter (born January 26, 1876 in Hroby , † August 29, 1935 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovak social democratic politician and minister, lawyer, sociologist and publicist.

Life

After Lev Winter had finished high school in Tábor , he studied at the law faculty of the German Karl Ferdinand University in Prague, where he received the title JUDr. attained. He then worked as a lawyer in Prague, and in the war years he acted as a defense attorney before military courts of the monarchy. His intention to pursue an academic career, he had to give up, as he was increasingly politically active in the social democracy. He joined the (then) Českoslovanská sociálně democická strana dělnická (ČSDSD, Czechoslovak Social Democratic Workers 'Party) in the 1890s, from 1907 he was a member of its presidium and in 1929 a member of the executive branch of the Socialist Workers' International .

Political activity

In 1907 Winter was elected to the Reichsrat and defended his mandate in the 1911 elections. In 1918 he was a member of the Czechoslovak National Committee , in 1920 he was elected to the Czechoslovak Chamber of Deputies , in 1925 and 1929 Winter was re-elected. From 1918–1920 and 1925–1926 he was Minister of Social Affairs in the governments of Karel Kramář , Vlastimil Tusar I , Vlastimil Tusar II , Antonín Švehla I and Antonín Švehla II .

Throughout his life, Winter focused on the areas of social legislation and especially social insurance, on which he wrote numerous articles in specialist journals and was considered an expert. In 1927, Winter became chairman of the International Committee of Health Insurance Funds. As an author of theoretical work and an ideologist of social democracy, he was later referred to as a “neo-Marxist revisionist”.
