Levi L. Conant

Levi Leonard Conant (born March 3, 1857 in Littleton , Massachusetts , † October 11, 1916 in Worcester , Massachusetts) was an American mathematician .

Life

Conant studied mathematics at Dartmouth College ( Hanover ) and achieved his BA there in 1879. After obtaining his MA in 1887, he moved to Syracuse University ( Syracuse ), where he received his doctorate in 1893 .

In the same year, Conant accepted a position as professor of mathematics at the Dakota School of Mines ( Rapid City ). In 1890 he moved to Clark University (Worcester) and a year later he went to the Worcester Polytechnic Institute .

In 1894 he married Laura Chamberlain. When his wife died in 1911, he married Emma B. Fisher for the second time after the obligatory year of mourning in 1912.

Levi L. Conant died in a traffic accident on October 11, 1916. In his will he left the American Mathematical Society (AMS) an amount of 10,000  dollars , in 1976 - was paid - after the death of Conant's second wife. With this heritage, the AMS has awarded the Levi L. Conant Prize since 2000 .
