Lev Evgenyevich Omelchenko

Lev Evgenyevich Omelchenko (born June 6, 1922 in Shashkiv ; † August 12, 2015 ) was a Soviet chess player who was mainly known for his successes in correspondence chess .

Correspondence chess

Omelchenko, who held the rank of master candidate in local chess, won the 9th and 10th correspondence chess championships of the USSR in 1970 and 1972 . He played a major role in ensuring that his country won the gold medal at the 7th and 8th Correspondence Chess Olympiad. In the finals of the 9th correspondence chess world championship in 1977 he finished 11th. He was the winner in the international Kurt Klar memorial tournament in 1984/87, and a year later in the Bertl von Massow tournament.

For his success in correspondence chess, he was awarded the title of Master of Sports of the USSR in 1971. In 1986 he received the title of Grand Master in correspondence chess .

Private

Omelchenko studied law in Leningrad until 1950 and then worked as a judge in Pyatigorsk .
