Levan Warschalomidze

Levan Warschalomidze ( Georgian ლევან ვარშალომიძე ; born January 17, 1972 in Batumi , Ajarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ) is a Georgian politician ( United National Movement ). The lawyer was General Director of the Georgian Railway from January to May 2004 . From July 20, 2004 to October 30, 2012, he was Prime Minister of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara .

Life

Youth and Studies

Varshalomidze grew up as the son of an influential Ajarian family in Batumi. His father is Guram Warschalomidze, who in 1992 with Warschalomidse's predecessor Aslan Abashidze founded the Adjarian Shipping Company and later was head of the Adjara Statistical Office.

Varshalomidze graduated from the 6th high school in Batumi with distinction. From 1989 to 1994 he studied law at the University of Kiev . In 1992 he studied at the same time at the International Institute for Human Rights in Strasbourg , in 1993 at the Academy for European Law in Florence and at the Institute for Public International Law and International Relations , Thessaloniki . In 1999 he received his doctorate in private law from the University of Kiev .

Ministerial Officer and Lawyer

In 1998, Warschalomidze became Head of Department for Bilateral Relations and International Law in the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in 2000 Head of Department for Justice in the Ministry of Justice. In 2002 he moved to the Ministry of Finance as head of the legal department.

Warschalomidze fell out with President Eduard Shevardnadze and resigned from the public service in March 2002. He went to the State Legal Institute of Georgia as a research assistant and founded the legal and financial advisory firm Damenia, Warschalomidze, Noghaideli & Kawtaradze (DVNK) in Tbilisi in September 2003 together with the future Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli and the later Justice Minister Gia Kawtaradze .

Prime Minister of Ajaria

On January 23, 2004, President Mikheil Saakashvili appointed him director of the Georgian state railway. After the change of power in Adjara , he was appointed head of Adjara administration by the president on May 5, 2004. On July 20, 2004, the Ajarian Parliament, the Supreme Council , elected him Prime Minister of the Autonomous Republic.

Ten months after his inauguration, he was suspected of holding key government positions with family members. MEP Eka Chercheulidze ( National Movement - Democrats ) presented on March 3, 2005 a list of 18 people who had not been hired because of their personal qualifications. Varshalomidze rejected all guilt.

Varshalomidze speaks English and Russian.
