The internally Lexus USF40 called luxury sedan of the LS series of Lexus was offered in Germany since January 2007 to January 2018 as the series with the new USF50 was replaced. USF40 is the last generation of the Lexus LS range and the first to be sold as such in Japan rather than a Toyota Celsior . It had the world's first automatic transmission with eight gears. With the LS 600h, the most powerful hybrid engine was available since June 2007 . It was also the first hybrid in the luxury class.

Technical innovations

Field of view monitor with infrared sensors on the steering wheel

Numerous technical innovations are available for the current Lexus LS series:

  • The field of view monitor is a camera mounted on the steering column that works with infrared assistance in the dark and monitors the symmetry of the driver's face. If an irregularity is detected, for example because the driver is looking out of the side window or if the driver closes his eyes too long during a dangerous microsleep , a message is sent to the on-board electronics.
  • The object recognition AODS uses a millimeter wave - radar , a stereo camera and infrared headlight ( sensor data fusion ) and monitors the area in front of and the roadway behind the vehicle.
  • The lane keep assistant LKA (Lane Keeping Assistant) monitors the lane markings using the stereo camera and warns optically and acoustically if the vehicle is driven over without the indicator being set.
  • When the automatic distance control is activated at the same time , the electric power steering (EPS) with variable transmission ratio (VGRS) actively supports the driver with artificially generated steering forces to keep the lane.
  • The emergency steering assistant (ESA) ensures that the steering responds more directly in a dangerous situation .
  • LED low beam in the LS 600h.

Summarized by the fusion of information in the Advanced Pre-Crash Safety System (A-PCS) (second generation), these systems should increase active safety and also intervene preventively. If the system detects an unavoidable collision, among other things, the belts are tightened, the brake assistant activated and the adaptive air suspension (AVS) regulated to minimize the consequences of the accident. At speeds below 40 km / h, the LS even brakes automatically to a standstill.

A sensor-controlled parking assistant (IPA) ( self-steering parking aid ) is also available for the LS 460 . A parking space is measured by an ultrasonic sensor in the area of the front bumper, then recorded by the rear camera and displayed on a monitor when reverse gear is engaged. The driver confirms this parking space and can drive into it, the steering working independently. The car has an integrated vehicle dynamics management (Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management VDIM) and semi-active chassis Adaptive Variable Suspension with air suspension .

Facelift

In the spring of 2010 there was a subtle facelift. It included slightly modified sills and rear lights. In addition, the radiator grille was changed as well as the air inlet below.

At the beginning of 2013 a major facelift was made to the LS. The rear lights, headlights, grille and sills of the current Lexus design line have been aligned. In addition, new LED headlights and rear lights are used.

Engines

For the Lexus LS series, two engines in two wheelbases are available. Both engines are V8 petrol engines. In the LS 600h / LS 600h L, the petrol engine is supported by an electric motor and a high-performance battery - a so-called full hybrid system. However, the battery pack reduces the luggage compartment volume from 505 liters in the LS 460 to 325 liters in the LS 600h / LS 600h L. In addition, the payload is reduced from 365–475 kg to 225–385 kg - depending on the equipment.

Hybrid

A hybrid drive is available for the Lexus LS 600h. This is a combination of a 5.0-liter V8 petrol engine and an electric motor. It has relatively low consumption and emissions. Its output is 327 kW (445 hp) with an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.3 s. At low speed it is driven exclusively by the electric motor. The LS 600h reaches speeds of up to 50 km / h in purely electric drive mode. At higher speeds and dynamic acceleration, the petrol engine is switched on automatically. The hybrid system has an intelligent control system that automatically selects the most effective and efficient combination of power sources. When braking and coasting, the electric motor converts the kinetic energy into electrical energy and stores it in the high-performance battery.

As an additional innovation, Lexus was the first manufacturer in the world to offer LED low beam for the first time as standard for the LS 600h. This consists of three LED lenses for the low beam and two additional LEDs for close-range illumination. The high beam function is taken over by a xenon light , turn signal and parking light function by incandescent lamps.
