The roots go back to the inventor Ernst Leybold and his partner Wilhelm Carl Heraeus , who are considered pioneers of vacuum coating technology and thin film technology. Since the division of the former Leybold AG in 1994, it has continued its former “Optical Coatings” division.

It had been part of the Swedish EQT investment group since 2001 , the previous owner was the Swiss company Unaxis and was offered for sale by EQT in 2011 . In 2012 the company was taken over by the Swiss technology company Bühler AG .
As part of a portfolio optimization at the beginning of 2013, Bühler AG wanted to sell the Solar division, located in Dresden, to a Chinese investor, but had to close this division in November 2013 without applying a social plan .

Products

Products that can be coated with these systems are mainly glasses, prisms and glass panes for use in industrial and private customer areas. Another large field are lenses for the human eye for glasses and cameras, which are remunerated using various complex processes (e.g. PECVD) and can also be used in chemistry and medical technology . The optical layers mostly serve to harden the surface and to avoid reflections . The main customers are companies such as Carl Zeiss , Siemens and Röhm-Pharma .
