Liam Mark Smith (born July 27, 1988 in Liverpool , Merseyside , United Kingdom ) is a British professional boxer and former WBO world light middleweight champion .

Amateur career

Among the amateurs , Smith was the English light welterweight champion in 2008 .

Professional career

On October 10, 2008 he successfully made his professional debut against his compatriot Duncan Cottier with a points win. On December 11th in 2010, in his seventh fight, he reached a four-round tie against Terry Carruthers, also a compatriot of his. In December 2012 he met Steve O'Meara (16-2) and beat him in a 12-round battle by unanimous decision. With this victory he earned the vacant Commonwealth Belt .

The following year he also won the vacant British Championship (BBBofC) when he unanimously defeated Erick Ochieng (14-1) in a fight scheduled for 12 rounds on points. He defended this title in the same year against Mark Thompson (25-3) by TKo in round four and in July of the following year against Jason Welborn (15-2) by knockout in round six.

In October of the same year he won the vacant WBA continental title with a knockout victory in round 3 against the Hungarian Zoltan Sera (16-2) and in April of the following year with a T .-Knockout victory in round 7 over the Argentine David Ezequiel Romero (11-5) the vacant WBO intercontinental title.

On October 10 of the same year Smith competed against the American John Thompson (17-1) for the vacant world championship belt of the WBO association. Smith was able to win this fight by technical knockout in the seventh round and thus conquered the world title. Two of the three judges thought the fight was even at 57:57, the other had 58:56 for Smith. He then defended the title against 'Jimmy' Kilrain Kelly (16-0) and Predrag Radošević (30-1).

On September 17, 2016, he lost the WBO belt by a knockout loss to the Mexican Saúl Álvarez (47-1). In April 2017 he defeated Liam Williams (16-0) in the fight for the interime WBO World Championship and also won the rematch in November 2017. In the fight for the regular WBO World Championship on July 21, 2018, however, he lost to Jaime Munguía (29 -0).

In March 2019 he won against Sam Eggington (24-5).
