Libert Froidmont

Libert Froidmont or (Latinized) Libertus Fromondus (also Libertus Fromundus / Fromond / Fromont ; * 3. September 1587 in Haccourt ( Liège ); † 27. October 1653 in Leuven ) was a Liege mathematician, astronomer, philosopher and Catholic theologian.

Life

Froidmont was educated by the Jesuits , joined the order and received a canonical at Tournai Cathedral . He had studied humanities at the Jesuit College in Liège and in 1604 philosophy at the University of Leuven . He then taught philosophy at St. Michael's Abbey in Antwerp for three years . In 1609 he received a professorship in rhetoric at the University of Leuven and in 1614 he took over the professorship in philosophy. In 1628 he received his doctorate in theology. After Cornelius Jansen went to Ypres as bishop, Froidmont became professor of the theological faculty on January 28, 1637, in the same year he took over the rectorate of the Löwener Alma Mater and on September 9, 1638 he was appointed dean of the associated university church of St. Peter (Sint-Pieterskerk). Here he also found his final resting place.

Froidmont had a profound knowledge of the Latin, Greek and Hebrew languages. His interest in the atmospheric phenomena of his time let him deal with mathematics, meteorology and astronomy. Out of his religious self- image he still represented the Catholic, scholastic worldview of the earth in the beginning of the 17th century , whereby he made a name for himself through some counter-writings against the heliocentric worldview . He also made a polemical appearance against the Dutch Calvinist Gisbert Voetius and was considered a critic of René Descartes , with whom he had contact by letter. He also wrote a few commentaries on the scriptures that were published between 1653 and 1663 after his death.
