Libon von Elis ( Greek  Λίβων ) is mostly considered an ancient Greek architect. He came from the area of Olympia in Elis and was in the first half of the 5th century BC. Responsible as construction manager of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia.

The otherwise unknown Libon is mostly considered to be the architect of the Temple of Zeus in Olympia, which was built between 480/470 and around 456 BC. Was built. His name is only known from a passage in Pausanias : "The architect (of the Temple of Zeus) is a man from the area with the name Libon " ( τέκτων δὲ ἐγένετο αὐτοῦ Λίβων ἐπιχώριος ). A precise chronological classification of the Libon's personality and his work is not possible. It is unlikely that he was the architect who designed the landmark Temple of Zeus. Whether he was born in Elis or acquired Elean citizenship is just as impossible to decide as the question of an alternative origin.

  2. ^ John James Coulton: Greek Architects at Work. Elek, London 1977, pp. 26-28 believes that Libon was an Elean aristocrat and only had control of the building and its financing.
  3. ^ Hans-Volkmar Herrmann : Olympia. Sanctuary and competition site. Hirmer, Munich 1972, p. 121 believes that Libon was honored with the citizenship of Elis for his services as an architect in the construction of the Temple of Zeus.
  4. ^ András Patay-Horváth: The builders of the Zeus temple. In: Hephaestus . Vol. 29, 2012, p. 48 suggested a Corinthian origin because of the great similarities between the Temple of Zeus and the Temple of Poseidon in Corinth .
