history

Neudöhlen was created in 1890 where the town of Weitzschen , which had been desolate since 1539 , used to be. Two town centers emerged, one on the Platz des Friedens near the border with Potschappel and the other between Schachtstrasse and today's Neumarkt on the border with Deuben. Between them, west of Dresdner Strasse, extends the factory premises of the Freital glassworks . For their workers, houses were built on the other side of the street in the 1930s.

After Freetal was founded on October 1, 1921, Neudöhlen attracted the attention of city leaders who wanted to build a representative city center for the city that had grown together from several small communities. Plans were devised to build the new city center on the border between Neudöhlen and Deuben. A town hall, a tax office, a building for the local health insurance fund and other administrative buildings were planned around the Neumarkt. However, the plans could not be fully implemented, for example the new town hall or the tax office were not built. Nevertheless, some representative administrative buildings such as the “ town house ”, which is used today as a medical center, were built.

The stork fountain with a small park

After the fall of the Wall , the early idea of a city center in Neudöhlen was taken up again, but the financial means for the realization of new building projects around the Neumarkt were lacking. After demolition work, a small city park was created around the former “Capitol” cinema opposite the glass factory, and the remaining residential buildings were renovated. The Storchenbrunnen , Freitals first well, got a new location in Neudöhlen in 2011/2012. The area around the fountain was then developed as the “Stadtquartier Storchenbrunnen”. A technology and commercial center (TGZ) was built on Neumarkt from 2011 to 2013, and by 2015 some of the buildings in the former plastic machine plant (later “Windbergarena”) were demolished and developed as land for companies to set up in addition to the TGZ. The "City Center" with residential and retail space was built not far from a private investor as early as the 1990s.
