Liebfrauenkapelle (Rapperswil)
The Liebfrauenkapelle in Rapperswil serves as the cemetery chapel of the Roman Catholic parish church St. Johann in the district of Rapperswil , municipality of Rapperswil-Jona , in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen .
location
The chapel stands on the rising eastern flank of the castle hill , in the northern part of the old town of Rapperswil , between Rapperswil Castle and the parish church by the Roman Catholic cemetery.
history
The first church in the shadow of the castle was built by order of the Counts of Rapperswil at the same time as the city and castle of Rapperswil around 1229. The ossuary under the chapel is said to date back to 1253, when Rapperswil became an independent parish and was given a cemetery .
architecture
The late Gothic , originally rectangular church building dates back to the year 1489 in its present form with the steep gable roof . A choir closed on five sides was added to its east side in 1675 . Two pointed arches north and one south window illuminate the nave , two side arched openings the choir. The interior is furnished with neo-Gothic furniture and, on the occasion of renovation work in 1917, richly decorated with Art Nouveau paintings. The Liebfrauenkapelle is used for weddings and prayer.
