Entrance area

The deceased from Liesing were initially buried in the Atzgersdorfer cemetery . In 1784 Liesing got its own cemetery on today's Dirmhirngasse , which was expanded in 1825.

Today's Liesing cemetery was established in 1863 and the old cemetery was closed. A girls' school was built in its place. In 1927 an urn grove was laid out in what is now the cemetery. In 1952 the cemetery was designated as the main cemetery of the Liesing district. The last of several extensions took place in 1960. The funeral hall built in 1920 was rebuilt in 1969/1970 by the architect Erich Boltenstern .

The war memorial Mourning Mother and Child by Rudolf Schmidt, unveiled in 1926, is located in Liesing Cemetery . The oldest surviving tombstone dates back to 1792 and marks the final resting place of Josef von Kurzböck, Lord of Ober- and Unterliesing and grandfather of August Neilreich, who was also buried here . After 1945 a memorial was erected in the cemetery for the freedom fighters from Liesingen against Austrofascism and the Nazi regime , on whose boards the names of those who were murdered and executed are engraved.
