The Ligat ha'Al ( Hebrew ליגת העל) is the highest Israeli division in men's handball . According to the main sponsor, the Winner Corporation , the league is officially named Ligat Winner ( Hebrew ליגת בכדוריד) designated. The current title holder is Maccabi Rishon LeZion's team , who became Israeli champions for the 15th time in 2019/20.
history
The Ligat ha'Al was introduced in 1954. In the early years Maccabi Rechovot dominated and won a total of five championships by the 1962/63 season. Up until that time, full-field handball was played on soccer fields with eleven players . It was not until 1963 that the championship was held in the form known today with seven players per team. In the following two decades, Hapoel Rechovot , which was founded due to internal disputes at Maccabi, was particularly successful and won a total of 13 championships. In 1974 no master was determined once. The previous championship of Hapoel Rechovot 1983/84 marked a change in Israeli handball. Since then, the two teams from Rishon LeZion , Hapoel and Maccabi have won the Israeli championship almost without exception. Particularly noteworthy is Hapoel Rischon LeZion's record from the 1990s, when the club was able to celebrate nine championships in a row.
Mode and Orientation
Game mode
First of all, the 12 participating teams in the Ligat ha'Al compete in a league system in which each club plays a round robin against every other club ( double round robin ). The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs, while the worst four teams have to go to the relegation round.
The playoffs begin with a quarter-finals in best-of-three mode , where the teams meet as follows: 1st place against 8th place, 2nd place against 7th place, 3rd place against 6th place and 4th place against 5th place. In the semifinals are each other then the winner 1/8 and the winner 4/5, as well as the winner 2/7 and the winner 3/6 opposite. The final between the two winners of the semifinals then takes place in the best-of-five mode. Home rights in the individual series changes from game to game, with the higher ranked team of the regular season having a home game in the first game (and thus also in the possibly decisive third or fifth).
The four teams in the relegation round initially contest a simple round-robin tournament. The best team remains in the Ligat ha'Al, while the worst is relegated directly to the second-rate league Le'umit . The teams in places 10 and 11 play relegation games against the third and second place finishers in the 2nd division.
Contrary to its geographic location, the Israeli champions (as well as the cup winners) are internationally eligible to qualify for European EHF competitions.
Alignment and name sponsorship
The Ligat ha'Al is organized by the Israel handball association , the Israel Handball Association (IHA), based in Tel Aviv .
The league has been officially named Ligat Winner since 2010 after the main sponsor Winner Corporation - an Israeli sports betting provider . It was previously called Ligat Bank Yahav after the previous main sponsor, the Jerusalem Bank Yahav .
