Lili Novy , née Lili Haumeder (born December 24, 1886 in Graz , † March 7, 1958 in Ljubljana ) was a German-Slovenian poet and translator.

Life

Lili Novy was born Lili Haumeder in Graz in 1886. She is the daughter of a German father and a Slovenian mother. Lili Novy received private lessons and was soon writing in German.

In her twenties she began to network in the Slovenian literary scene and to translate France Prešeren's German poems into Slovenian and vice versa. Alojz Gradnik influenced her literary production and she received encouragement from the poet Oton Župančič , whose poems she also transcribed. During these years she began to publish in literary journals, such as in the Braunschweig cultural magazine Westermanns monthly .

She translated individual works by Goethe into Slovene and translated Croatian, Serbian and Slovene poetry into German. The translated authors include Bozena Buković, Iva Rod, Vida Taufer, Ivana Brlić-Mazuranić and Vera Alb nearly . Her friends include Camilla Lucerna and Paula von Preradović . The translations appeared in the Zagreb German daily newspapers such as the Agramer Zeitung and the Morgenblatt .

During her life she dedicated the unpublished poetry collection Lilly's poems in 1929 to her friend Vida Novak . In 1941 the Temna vrata collection was published. Her second book Oboki was published posthumously in 1959.

She settled in Ljubljana, where she also died. Her grave is in the Žale cemetery .
