Lily Zografou
Lily Zografou ( Greek Λιλή Ζωγράφου ; * 1922 in Milatos , Crete ; † October 2, 1998 in Heraklion ) was a Greek journalist and writer .
Life
Even as a young woman, the daughter of journalist Andreas Zografos rebelled against the prevailing moral concepts and prohibitions of the extremely patriarchal society of Crete . As a philology student, she joined the anti-fascist liberation movement during World War II . In 1943 she was arrested by the German occupiers and gave birth to her daughter, the later poet, Rena Chatzidaki .
After finishing her studies, Lily Zografou first wrote for literary magazines. In 1949 her first book Agápi (Love), a collection of short stories, was published. She then traveled to Central and Eastern Europe for many years and worked as a journalist. Her breakthrough came with a treatise on the writer Níkos Kazantzákis : énas traghikós (Nikos Kazantzakis: a tragic figure). She became one of the most successful and controversial writers in Greece.
She published 24 novels, plays and essays and became a bestselling author in Greece . So far three of her books have been published in Germany:
- I agápi árgise mia méra (German: The women of the Ftenoudos family , 2004),
- Epággelma: Pórni ( Eng .: profession: whore , short stories, 2006) and
- I gynaíka sou i alítissa ( Eng .: your wife, the bitch , 2007).
I agápi árgise mia méra was filmed in 1998, four years after its publication for Greek television. Epággelma: Pórni has now reached the 40th edition in Greece. An important, recurring theme of her work is the struggle of women for self-determination, freedom and independence.
