Liller 1 is a globular cluster in the constellation Scorpio , about 31,300 light-years away , that was discovered in 1977 by the astronomer William Liller . Although Liller is numbered 1, it is the only object named after William Liller.

Physical Properties

Panoramic image of the 2MASS

Although the false-color representations of the infrared images do not reflect this, Liller 1 is reddish in its overall appearance, i.e. it has a low color index and a high level of metallicity . Together with the globular clusters NGC 6553 , NGC 6440 and NGC 6528, it has the highest metallicity in the Milky Way. The globular cluster is believed to have formed early in the formation of the Milky Way, and the high metallicity has since arisen due to nucleosynthesis in stars .

Another special feature of the globular cluster is a ray binary class X-ray burster .
