The Lime Kiln Farm Wildlife Sanctuary is a 260 acres (1.1 square kilometers ) wide reserve in Sheffield in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .
Protected area
There are more than 500 different plant species in the protected area, including many that are classified as rare. It belongs to the 14,000 acres (56.7 km²) Schenob Brook Area of Critical Environmental Concern and, with its meadows, coniferous forests and former pastures, offers a habitat for red- horned woodpeckers , aldercatchers and red foxes as well as over 50 different species of butterflies.
Owes its name to reserve one located there, 40 ft (12.2 m ) high lime kiln ( English lime kiln ) to 1909, with the out of the dismantled there limestone directly on site building lime produced. Stone walls and wire fences still bear witness to the past today. There are 2 mi (3.2 km ) of hiking trails available to visitors, including good views of Mount Everett .
