history

In the Middle Ages , Limekilns served as the seaport for the inland Dunfermline Abbey . The monks maintained a storage building on the site from 1362, which was presumably mainly used as a granary for maritime trade. In the early to mid-16th century, the warehouse was rebuilt, from which today's King's Cellar emerged . The name of the village means "lime kilns". The eponymous lime kiln was built around 1780 on rocks above the coast. Soap and rope were produced in Limekilns. The village has been protected as a Conservation Area since 1984 .

Between 1841 and 1881 the population of Limekilns fell from 950 to 698. In 1961 there were 753 inhabitants. After 1620 lived in Limekilns in 1991, the population fell to 1377 in 2011.
