Early life

His father, Bill Onus, was a political activist and businessman, and his mother, Maud Mary Onus, née Nelson, was a Scottish woman. His father was the founder of the Aboriginal Advancement League and its first president, who died in 1968, a year after the successful year-long campaign for Aboriginal suffrage.

Primarily a community artist and self-taught artist , Onus was initially an engine mechanic before making handicrafts for tourists for his father's Enterprise Novelties company .

Career as an artist

Onus became an important Aboriginal painter, sculptor and graphic artist . His painting Barmah Forest won Canberra's National Aboriginal Heritage Award in 1994.

The works of Onus represent a symbolization of the Aboriginal painting style with the inclusion of artistic elements of contemporary art. In his works there are impressive representations of the red acacia forests of Barmah , the land of his father's ancestors, and he used the rarrk , a painting style based on overhatching, which he learned and was allowed to use after visiting the indigenous settlement of Maningrida .

He paid special attention to the artistic representation.

His best-known work Michael and I are just slipping down to the pub for a minute was published on a postcard and is a reference to his artist colleague Michael Eather . The painting shows a dingo on the back of a stingray , which represents the culture of its parents and is related to the reconciliation of these two peoples. The illustration of the wave is based on the picture The Great Wave off Kanagawa (1832) by the Japanese graphic artist Katsushika Hokusai .

death

Lin Onus died at the age of 48 and was buried on the border of New South Wales and Victoria near the Aboriginal settlement of Cummeragunja .
