Lina myr

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lina myr was a bog on the Swedish island of Gotland . It was Gotland's last large bog and was drained when the water level began to drop in 1947.

The area is in the northern half of Gotland about ten kilometers from the west coast. The size of the moorland in the first half of the 20th century was estimated at 900-920 hectares. The southern part was 13.1  m ö.h. high, the northern part 10.6  m above sea level The area was almost rectangular and rested on a limestone bedrock . The bog contained two major reservoirs of water: Lina träsk (also called Flatmen ) and Råby träsk , which together were about 50 hectares in size. The two lakes were connected by the continuous Hörsneån stream, which was called Gothemsån from its outflow from the bog at Nybro . It is Gotland's largest river and flows into the sea at Åminne about ten kilometers south of Slite . The inflow to Lina myr came mainly from the mouth of the Källungeån stream in the west and from the Landån stream in the south. Most of the water was brought to the area as meltwater in spring, and rainfall on Gotland is low. The area consisted mainly of fens and swamps. The central area was lush with reeds.

Lina myr had a very rich flora and bird fauna. In a ranking of Swedish bird waters drawn up in 1940, the area was ranked in the top eight. Censuses in the 1930s and 1940s showed that around 100 different bird species were breeding in the moor and its immediate vicinity and that 57 different bird species were regularly in the area. In particular, there were breeding Wagtail , Black-headed Gull , Northern Shoveler , lapwing , ruff , redshank , curlew , corncrake , Spotted Crake , Red-backed Shrike , Collared Flycatcher , Black Woodpecker and Cuckoo . Regularly, but also bred in smaller numbers tern , black-tailed godwit , little gull , turncoat , nightjar and marsh harrier . Today most of the breeding birds in the wetland have disappeared. However, specimens such as the curlew and the corncrake still breed in the area.
