The Linden-Pug ( Eupithecia egenaria ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the tensioner (Geometridae). The specific epithet is based on the Latin word egenus meaning "needy" and probably refers to the inconspicuous appearance of the butterfly.

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 18 to 24 millimeters. The basic color of all wings varies from light gray to light brown-gray. Freshly hatched specimens have a silky sheen. The double transverse lines that delimit the disk region on the upper side of the forewing on both sides are typical of the species . An elongated black discoid stain is only indistinctly different. The post-disk region is designed as a gray-white band. The wavy line is white, the fringes are gray and not piebald.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are smooth and elongated. They are colored yellow-green to light green and almost without drawing.

Distribution and occurrence

The distribution of the species extends in the west from the Iberian Peninsula and France including the British Isles and further east through central Europe to the Urals . In the north, the distribution extends to southern Fennoscandinavia , in the south to the southern edge of the Alps and in the southeast through Bulgaria and Ukraine to the Caucasus and Armenia .

The lime moth is a character animal of dense stands of linden trees such as avenues and parks. It also occurs in the middle of metropolitan areas.

Way of life

The crepuscular and nocturnal moths fly in one generation in May and June. Depending on the development of the linden blossom, slightly different flight times can occur. They rarely visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars, which live in June and July, feed on the pistils and stamens of the summer linden tree ( Tilia platyphyllos ), less often on the petals, but never on the leaves. Sometimes the buds of the winter linden ( Tilia cordata ) are also accepted as food. The species overwinters in the pupal stage.

Danger

The lime-tree moth occurs in Germany in different numbers in the individual federal states and is classified as "not endangered" on the Red List of Endangered Species in most regions. In Baden-Württemberg the species is on the warning list. Since the moths and caterpillars are mostly in the treetops, they are easily overlooked.
