The Lindenfriedhof is an urban burial place in the Zatorze district (German: Stadtwaldviertel) in Gliwice (Gleiwitz). To the south of the Lindenfriedhof is the New Jewish Cemetery in Gleiwitz.

history

The linden cemetery was laid out in 1885 in the then Gliwice suburb of Petersdorf (Polish: Szobiszowice ) and had a size of 6 hectares.

Fallen soldiers were buried here during the First World War, including 196 Germans, 230 Russians, 16 Romanians, Serbs, French and Italians. The “Memorial to the Fallen in World War I” from 1927 with the sculpture “The Mourners” by the sculptor Hanns Breitenbach commemorates them .

The “Christ the divine childhood friend” monument by the Silesian sculptor Paul Ondrusch is also located in the Lindenfriedhof . The memorial was erected for 76 children who died in a fire in the "Stadtgarten" cinema theater in 1919 and were buried here in a mass grave. Until 1945, the German inscription “Let the little children come to me”, a well-known Bible quote from the Gospels, was on the children's grave monument . The monument is now in a different form, the original staircase is missing, the upper final part of the wall and on the wall surface around the sculptures another layer of cement was applied with a rough surface.

In 2003 the cemetery area was expanded considerably. This happened on areas that previously belonged to the culture and recreation park . The cemetery currently has a size of 11.5 hectares.
