Raymond Russell Lindwall MBE (born October 3, 1921 in Mascot , New South Wales , Australia , † June 23, 1996 in Brisbane , Australia) was an Australian cricket and rugby league player. He is considered one of the best near-bowlers in the history of cricket. In 1949 he was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year .

Career

Ray Lindwall played 61 test matches for Australia , scoring a total of 1502 runs (21.15 runs per wicket ) and 228 wickets. He made his test debut in March 1946 against New Zealand in Wellington . In test matches, Ray Lindwall managed a total of two centuries (at least 100 runs). He scored his first Century on New Year's Day 1947 against England in Melbourne , the second Century on May 14, 1955 against the West Indies team in Bridgetown , Barbados. Alongside Donald Bradman, Lindwall was the key player in the Australian team that played for The Ashes in England in 1948 and went down in history as The Invincibles . In this test series against England he got a total of 27 wickets and only allowed 19.62 runs per wicket. He had his last test run for Australia in January 1960 against India in Calcutta.

Others

Ray Lindwall was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 1996. In 2010 he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. He was elected to the Team of the Century by the Australian Cricket Board .
