The Line 1 ( "Red Line") of the Delhi Metro is the first line, which was built in Delhi. The route has 29 stations and runs from Rithala in the north of Delhi via Dilshad Garden in the east of Delhi to Shaheed Shtal in Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) over a distance of 34.7 kilometers. The entire line runs as an elevated railway.

history

Line 1 is the first line of the Delhi Metro. The first section from Tis Hazari to Shahdara opened on December 25, 2002. The remaining sections of Phase I up to Rithala were put into operation by April 2004. The first three lines form a cross with two axes in an east-west direction, which form the basis of the route network. In phase II, the line was extended eastwards to Dishad Garden to the state border in Uttar Pradesh in 2008.

Extensions phase III

An extension by 9.5 kilometers to the east is currently under construction. The route will be extended from Dilshad Garden Station to New Bus Stand Adda in Ghaziabad in the state of Haryana. The construction work, which is part of the Phase III project, began in 2015 and should be completed by the end of 2018. In March 2018, the last parcels of land for the metro stations were acquired in order to build the necessary facilities for escape routes. The opening of this section should take place by the end of 2018, as only 8.1 billion INR of the committed funds of the urban development authority of Ghaziabad in the amount of 14.84 billion INR were released. On August 27th, the test runs began on the new section between Dilshad Garden and New Bus Adda for speed and braking tests as well as signal tests and tests of automatic operation. These are necessary for the issuing of the operating license. The extended section was formally commissioned on March 8, 2019, together with the extension of Line 4 in Noida by Prime Minister Modi. At the same time, two stations were renamed by the district magistrate in Ghaziabad: The terminus New Bus Adda in Shaheed Shtal and the Mohan Nagar station after the fallen officer Major Mohit Sharma, who was killed in a terrorist attack on March 21, 2009 in Jammu and Kashmir . Major Mohit Sharma was posthumously bestowed the Ashoka Chakra, the highest military honor in peacetime.

depot

The depot of this line with storage halls, workshops and the washing facility is located north of the Shastri Park station on the banks of the Yamuna in the north-east of Delhi. It can be approached from the east as well as from the west. There is also a DMRC training center on the premises.

Phase IV: Direction Narela

As part of the Phase IV project of the Delhi Metro , the line is to be extended to Narela (21.73 km). The plans envisage aligning the platforms to the length of nine cars. At the same time, this would mean that the line extension does not connect directly to the existing route, but is constructed as an independent line. The following stations are planned: Rohini Sector 26, Rohini Sector 31, Rohini Sector 32, Rohini Sector 36, Rohini Sector 37, Barwala, Put Khurd, Bawana Industrial Area - 1, Bawana Industrial Area - 2, Bawana, Bawana JJ Colony, Sanpath, New Sanath Colony, Anaj Mandi and Narela.

In April 2018 there will be a discussion as to whether the extension is economical and can be implemented. The government of Delhi doubts this, as the route runs for a long distance along areas with low population density, and therefore withdraws its approval for the project. It is therefore questionable whether the metro line will be extended. In addition, the route competes with the planned RRTS route from Delhi to Panipat with a stop in Narela. The RRTS line would connect Narela via a significantly shorter route along the existing railway line to Sonipat, which runs parallel to the NH-44 at a distance of a few kilometers. The RRTS project has also received funding from the Union government for 2018, so that project progress can be expected.

After the government of Delhi approved all projects as part of Phase IV in December 2018 and at the same time linked this to a 50:50 cost sharing with the Union government, the Indian central government has now approved only three route extensions in March 2019, in which the extension line 1 is no longer included.
