The Airport Express Line (“Orange Line”) of the Delhi Metro runs from New Delhi Station to Dwarka Sector 21 station and connects Indira Gandhi Airport with downtown Delhi. The line opened on February 23, 2011 and the cost of construction was 57 billion rupees, of which 28.85 billion INR was borne by Reliance Infra.

The total length of the route is 22.7 kilometers, of which 15.7 kilometers run in the tunnel and 7 kilometers between Buddha Jayanti Park and Mahipalpur as an elevated railway. The trains run at a maximum speed of 135 km / h, while 80 km / h is common in the rest of the metro network. The travel time from New Delhi to Terminal 3 is 20 minutes.

history

The first tenders for the Airport Express line were issued in September 2007. On January 23, 2008, the DMRC awarded a PPP to a consortium of Reliance Energy - CAF for the planning, construction and operation over 30 years. The DMRC paid only half of the construction costs and carried out the tunnel and construction work. The elevated sections of the Airport Express Line cross eight heavily used roads such as the Ring Road, National Highway 8, Ridge Road and Sardar Patel Marg.

The original plan was that the track should open on August 31, 2010 to be in operation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games . Ultimately, however, it was only opened after the games on February 23, 2011, after the commissioning was postponed several times. The DMRC demanded from Reliance Infra 3,750,000 rupees from September 30, 2010 as a daily penalty, most recently even 7.5 million rupees daily from October 31, 2010 for repeated schedule overruns. The Delhi Aerocity and Dhaula Kuan stations only went into operation on August 15, 2011.

On July 8, 2012, the line operation was temporarily suspended due to technical problems, as cracks appeared in the beams of the elevated railway and faults in the tracks, and water seeped into the tunnels. The Ministry of Urban Development subsequently revealed that various anchors in the underground sections of the route were seriously damaged and that it would take at least five months to correct the problem. A joint inspection of the section with employees of the Delhi Metro and the Reliance Infrastructure Team showed that 540 columns had to be replaced and some girders with cracks had to be redesigned.

On January 23, 2013, the route was opened to traffic again, but with a reduced top speed of only 50 km / h. This was gradually increased again after inspections by the DMRC and other experts. The travel time to the airport was 40–50 minutes.

On June 27, 2013 Reliance Infrastructure Ltd. announced that they could no longer operate the route from June 30, 2013. As a result, operations were transferred to DMRC on July 1, 2013, which now operates the route with over 100 employees for operation and maintenance. The top speed was increased again to 80 km / h from mid-2014. In January 2015, the DMRC reported that the Airport Express has seen over thirty percent increase in passengers after the fare was reduced by 40 percent in July 2014. In the future, the maximum speed is to be increased again to the target mark of 105 km / h.

business

Originally, 24-hour operation with a 10-minute cycle was planned on this line. Operation is now offered at 15-minute intervals from 4:45 a.m. to 11:40 p.m., and 10-minute intervals between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

While, according to the project planning, around 42,000 passengers were expected at the opening in 2011, the number of passengers was initially well below expectations (around 20,000 per day). Only a significant reduction in the fare caused the number of passengers to skyrocket. In 2016 it exceeded the limit of 50,000 travelers per day for the first time.

Check-in counter

Passengers departing from Terminal T3 with Air India or Jet Airways can already check in at the New Delhi metro station. Check-in is possible from 6 hours to 2½ hours before departure.

WiFi service

Since January 13, 2012, the Airport Express Line has been offering a WLAN service at all six stations along the route. This route is the first in Delhi's metro system to offer this service. Later the service will also be extended to trains. The WiFi service is provided by YOU Broadband India Limited .

Planned extensions

The route is to be extended by one station to Dwarka sector 25 in order to connect to the future Exhibition cum Convention Center (ECC). For this purpose, a 1.7 km long route is to be built that ends in an underground station. The station is also to receive an underground station within the ECC complex, which is connected to the station with connecting corridors. Construction work to extend the route began in April 2018.
