The Rapid Metro Gurgaon is a metro line in the city of Gurgaon in the Indian state of Haryana . The line is operated by an independent company, but is connected to the line network of the Delhi Metro and integrated into the same ticket system ( tokens or smart cards) so that they can also be used here. You can change at the Sikanderpur station. The entire line of the Rapid Metro Gurgaon is constructed as an elevated railway with a length of 11.7 km and serves eleven stations in the north of Gurgaon.

The operating company Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon Limited (RMGL) is a privately financed company that financed the first sections of the Rapid Metro from private funds. This should provide an additional marketing incentive for the adjacent properties in the Cyber City.

The first section of the route from Sikanderpur with the loop to Cyber City was opened on November 14, 2013. The second section along Golf Course Road to Rajesh Pilot Road was opened on December 31. Commissioned in March 2017.

history

Phase I.

The 3.2 km long metro line between Sikanderpur and National Highway 8 was originally proposed in September 2007. The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) invited companies in 2008 to express their interest in the project in order to allow construction and operation for 99 years. The property development company DLF wanted to offer a metro connection to Cyber City for marketing purposes right from the start. In a renewed invitation to tender in July 2008, a consortium of DLF and IL&FS turned out to be the only bidder. The project should then be built jointly by DLF and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS). However, due to financial problems, DLF withdrew from the project and IL&FS became the sole owner. The company did not receive any public funding from the Indian federal government or the state of Haryana to carry out the project. Even the land needed to build the Rapid Metro was not made available to the company through the concession.

The Rapid Metro was the first fully privately financed metro system in India. The project was carried out as a public-private partnership. The entire cost was raised from private funds, while the government of Haryana provided the land and the operating rights on a long lease basis. The operation is also carried out at the expense of the private owner. While the HUDA was originally against a private company making profits from public transport, a contract was later concluded that obliged the consortium to pay HUDA 7.65 billion INR over 35 years as a "network fee" and 5–10 % of advertising revenue and property development proceeds.

The contract for this INR 9 billion project was signed in July 2009 and envisaged completion within 30 months. The foundation stone was laid on August 11, 2009. The route was both built and now operated by Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon Limited (RMGL). The actual cost of the project was reported to be INR 10.88 billion in October 2012.

Originally planned for 2012, the phase I section was opened on November 14, 2013.

Phase II

On June 11, 2013, IL&FS Engineering and Construction Company Limited announced on the Bombay Stock Exchange that it had bid for 2,665 Billion INR to build the elevated railway line for phase 2. The construction project should be completed within 24 months. In addition, IL&FS also won a tender for the construction of the five stations of the project worth INR 843 million. The southern extension takes place as a double-track line over 6.6 km length from Sikanderpur to Sector 55 and 56 in Gurgaon. While phase 2 and phase 3 took place on the section between stations, in October 2012 the foundation stone for the expansion was laid by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh.

Construction work on Phase II began in April 2013 and should originally be completed by July 2015. Ultimately, the aim was to complete it by the end of 2016. In June 2016, 75% of the construction work of phase 2 was completed. The test drives along the 6.3 km long route was carried out in December 2016. In March 2017, the inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety - the final acceptance for approval - was placed. The opening then took place on March 31, 2017.

Siemens Transportation won the tender as the main contractor for the construction of the cars on April 21, 2010. Siemens was therefore to deliver five 3-car trains. The order to build the car was passed on to the Chinese company CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Works as a subcontractor. The first 3-car trains built in China reached Gurgaon on Nov. September 2012. The RMGL ordered in the course of the expansion in phase II another seven trains at Siemens. The last four of these trains were launched on Jan. Delivered to Gurgaon in February 2016.

The 3-car trains each cost around INR 300 million. The color scheme is silver and blue. The total length of a train is about 60 m. The car bodies are 2.8 m wide and have four doors on each side, and air conditioning is installed in the roof. Each train can accommodate around 800 passengers. Operating company

The line is operated by Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon Limited (RMGL), which was founded as a joint venture between real estate companies DLF and IL&FS. DLF owns many real estate projects along the route, while IL&FS is the majority owner in the joint venture. The DLF later sold its shares to the company IL&FS and left the joint venture. Thereafter, IL&FS Transportation Networks Ltd (ITNL) held an 82.8% stake in RMGL, and the subsidiary IL&FS Rail Ltd (IRL) held a 17.2% stake. To reduce the financial burden, the ITNL sold a 49% stake back to the parent company Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Ltd (IL&FS) on February 11, 2016 .
