The line 8 (span. Linea 8 , short-L-8) is a subway -line of Metro Madrid . It runs from the Nuevos Ministerios station in the city center to the Aeropuerto T4 station (airport terminal 4), is 16.4 kilometers long and has eight stations. As the line from the beginning as a fast connection between the city center and the exhibition center Feria de Madrid and the Madrid-Barajas airport has been planned, the average distance between stations is approximately three times as large as in the other lines. The line, which runs completely underground, is part of the large-profile network and the length of the stations is 115 meters each.

You can change to other metro lines at three stations, and at two stations to the Cercanías suburban railway . The connection is tailored to the needs of flight passengers. The trains used have fewer seats, but baggage racks. In addition, it was possible for a number of years to check in luggage in Nuevos Ministerios , which was abolished in 2006 for safety reasons. There are screens on the platforms that inform passengers about delays and cancellations of flights.

history

When the ambitious expansion program for the Madrid Metro was decided in 1995, initially only a connection between Mar de Cristal and the Feria de Madrid exhibition center was planned. For reasons of noise protection, the planners rejected a partially above-ground route and preferred a completely underground route.

The decision to also connect the airport to the new line was only made in 1997 after years of negotiations and planning. Renfe railway lines from Chamartín station and from the route to Alcalá de Henares as well as extensions of the L-5 and L-7 metro lines were also discussed .

On June 14, 1998, King Juan Carlos I opened the section between Mar de Cristal and the airport station Aeropuerto , the section to Barajas followed on September 7 of the same year. Although the L-8 is a large-profile line, small-profile trains of the 2000 series ran for the first four years because there was no connection to the rest of the large-profile network; the platforms had to be provisionally widened. With the extension of the line to Nuevos Ministerios on May 21, 2002, this measure could be omitted. On May 3, 2007, the new Aeropuerto T4 terminus was opened, which connects to the new T4 airport terminal completed in 2005.

From 1982 to 1998 another line was named L-8. It was the northern part of today's L-10 .
