Lip Service is a British drama series about a group of lesbian women in the Scottish Glasgow . The series was produced in Glasgow from 2009 to 2011. The first broadcast was on October 12, 2010 on the British broadcaster BBC Three .

Idea and creation

The idea for the “Lip Service” series came from Harriet Braun, who previously worked as an author for “Mistresses”, among other things. At first she had reservations about the project herself - because of the inevitable comparison with the American series " The L Word ". Eventually, however, she concluded that there was room for two lesbian drama series - not least because lesbian women had been underrepresented on British television until then.

"Lip Service" was produced by Kudos Film and Television (" Life on Mars ") on behalf of BBC Scotland . The first season was filmed in Glasgow in 2009 and was broadcast on the British broadcaster BBC Three from October 12, 2010 . A second season was commissioned at the end of 2010. The shooting began at the end of May 2011. The broadcast began on April 20, 2012 on BBC Three.

After the second season, the series was discontinued by BBC Three.

action

The focus of the series is the relationship between Frankie ( Ruta Gedmintas ) and Cat ( Laura Fraser ). They have been best friends since childhood and later lovers. The two could hardly be more different: Frankie is impulsive and always looking for adventure; Cat, on the other hand, values order and is looking for a mature, adult relationship. When Frankie leaves Glasgow to work as a photographer in New York, Cat struggles to get over the relationship.

In addition to Cat and Frankie, Tess, Jay and Ed also play an important role. They are Cat and Frankie's best friends, and they suffer from relationship problems as much as they do themselves.

season 1

After Frankie learns of the death of her aunt, with whom she grew up after the death of her parents, she returns to Glasgow and thus confuses Cat's life, which has finally overcome the painful separation.

Frankie's family is very hostile towards her, despite the bereavement. At first it gives the impression that the family is not getting along with their homosexual lifestyle and is therefore resisting them. In the course of the first season, Frankie finds out that there is more behind the matter than the family tells her. In search of herself and her true life story, Frankie finally discovers that her parents, who died in a car accident when she was three, are not her birth parents. The family, especially their uncle, is very closed on this issue. When she also finds out that her uncle is really her father, a world collapses for her. Meanwhile, she tries to find support with Cat.

Cat, who found the relationship with Frankie difficult to leave behind, has now started a relationship with the police officer Sam Murray ( Heather Peace ). Nevertheless, Cat asks Sam to help clarify Frankie's true origins, which not only leads to relationship problems between Cat and Sam, but also helps Frankie to find out who her real parents are.

Tess ( Fiona Button ), a more or less successful actress, was first Cats, later Frankie's roommate. She is unhappy in love with the successful presenter Lou ( Roxanne McKee ), who prefers an affair with her male colleague due to her career. Ed is unhappy in love with the openly lesbian Tess, and experiences a severe setback after his admission of love. And Jay, who is in a relationship with Becky ( Cush Jumbo ), cheats with a colleague and even with Frankie.

season 2

Frankie took the courage to meet her birth mother, after initial difficulties they both get along well, but Frankie's mother continues to try to hide the fact that she has a daughter from her husband.

Meanwhile, Cat admits that she still loves Frankie and wants to be with her. But she doesn't want to hurt Sam either, so she stays with her and has an affair with Frankie. On her birthday, after a liaison with Frankie, Cat is run over by a car when she inadvertently crosses the street reading a text message. She dies shortly after in the hospital.

When Frankie only learns of the death of her secret lover the next day, Frankie tries to talk to her birth mother, but is rejected by her, so that it is even more difficult for her to overcome the loss. Shortly after Cat dies, she goes back to New York.

Sam is also clearly struggling with Cat's death. However, when she gradually finds out that Cat was having an affair with Frankie, her grief turns into anger. She also suffers from panic attacks, which have a negative effect on her job.

Tess, who now lives with Lexy and Sadie, got a role in a play where she befriends some colleagues, but is also harassed by a colleague. Tess feels something for her roommate Lexy and hopes that she feels the same way. On the day the piece premiered, she wanted to impress Lexy all the more. At the same time as Tess, Lexy met Sam by chance while jogging and got along very well with her from the start. At first she is unsure whether she feels more for Tess or Sam. But if Sam ultimately decides in order not to hurt Tess, she hides it from her.
