Scientific name
Liphistiidae
Thorell , 1869

The Liphistiidae are the only recent family within the suborder of the articulated spiders (Mesothelae). Therefore, like the subordination, they are simply called limb spiders in German . They are considered to be very primitive web spiders . The family includes eight genera with 101 species . (As of October 2017)

distribution

All species have been found exclusively in Southeast Asia . There their distribution area extends in the west to Myanmar , in the south they still occur on Sumatra and in the east and north from China to Japan .

Way of life

Probably only females and not yet sexually mature individuals live in self-dug caves that are lined with web. Starting from the entrance, some bundles of silk thread are placed around it, which have a function as "motion detectors". The entrance itself is closed with a thin lid made of spider silk, earth particles, stones and twigs. Males probably leave their den when they are sexually mature and go in search of burrows for females and mating. Only males of the genus Vinanthela have been found so far, of the other genera more females, so that little is known about the way of life of these hidden animals.
