Lipogenys gillii is a deep-sea fish from the family of thorn-back eels (Notacanthidae). It occurs along the North American Atlantic coast from the Hudson Canyon in front of the mouth of the Hudson River to Nova Scotia at depths of 400 to 2000 meters. Further populations are said to exist in the southwestern Pacific off the coast of Australia and near Japan.

features

Lipogenys gillii becomes 50 cm long. The species has an eel-like long, laterally but flattened body, which is supported by 228 to 234 vertebrae. The tail is slender and pointed. A caudal fin is missing. In contrast to other thornback eels, it has a short dorsal fin supported by 6 to 8 fin spines and 4 to 5 segmented soft rays. The height of the dorsal fin rays increases from front to back. The first one to three fin spines are not connected to the fin membrane. The long anal fin begins close behind the anus and extends to the tip of the tail. The anterior fin rays are spiny, the posterior segmented, the transition is fluid. There are 44 to 54 fin spines and 67 to 88 soft rays indicated, a total of 116 to 136. The mouth is underneath, small and like a sucking mouth. The upper lip is thick, wrinkled and covered with fleshy papillae. Its rear end is strongly bent downwards. The short lower jaw is enclosed by the upper jaw when the mouth is closed. Teeth are missing. The number of Branchiostegal rays is 5 to 7, that of the pyloric tubes 5 to 7. The shoulder girdle is somewhat degenerated, Cleithrum and Supracleithrum, two cover bones, are missing. There is no gill trap . Lipogenys gillii is light brown, the gill chamber and the edge of the gill cover are dark brown, the oral cavity is slightly yellowish.

nutrition

Lipogenys gillii feeds on organic material ( detritus ), which it ingests from the sea floor with its sucking mouth and also ingests small, soft invertebrates and macrozoobenthos .
