description

Appearance and leaf

Lippia magentea is a shrubby plant with a height of 0.5 to 4 meters. The branches are upright and thornless. What is striking is the rough hairs with simple, white hairs that the entire plant has on stems and leaves.

The opposite arranged leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is 1 to 1.5 inches long. The simple leaf blade is egg-shaped with a length of 6 to 12 centimeters and a width of 3 to 5.5 centimeters with a pointed upper end and a toothed edge.

Inflorescence and flower

The flowering period is from February to April and sporadically in July, August, November and December.

The individually standing, lateral inflorescences have a height of 4.5 to 5.5 centimeters and are thus shorter than the leaves. The rachis is about 1.5 inches long.

The hermaphroditic flowers have a double flower envelope . The sepals are about 2 millimeters long and bilobed and rounded at the front. The petals are similarly scaly and magenta in color. With a length of 10 to 15 millimeters and a width of 3 to 5.5 millimeters, they are egg-shaped with a pointed upper end. The entire corolla is correspondingly magenta in color. The corolla tubes are about 9 millimeters long with a golden yellow inside.

fruit

The fruits are green when unripe and later turn black with a smooth surface when ripe. The mesocarp is thin and there are two stone cores (pyrene).

Occurrence

Lippia margentea has so far been described from Bahia and Minas Gerais in Brazil. They thrive in the caatinga forests and the cerrados , both of which are characterized by a semi-arid climate with little rainfall per year.

Original description

Tânia Regina dos Santos Silva described Lippia magentea in 2001 as

“Haec species a congeneris habitu fruticoso, indumento hirsuto; folis amplis; inflorescentia foliis breviore bracteis inter se aequalibus munita; corolla magentea atque fructus pyrenis duabus distinguitur. "

Translation: “This species differs from the related [species] by [the following characteristics]: shrubby habit, dense hairs; large leaves; with an inflorescence that is shorter than the leaves and with bracts that are the same size among themselves; with a magenta-colored crown and fruits with two stone cores. "

Tânia Regina dos Santos Silva discovered this species during a revision of the closely related genus Lantana .

Systematics

Lippia magentea is of dos Santos Silva than one type of Süßkräuter ( Lippia ) within the verbena plants described (Verbenaceae). Above all, it shows a similarity to Lippia macrophylla from the Atlantic coastal forests due to the same habitus, but distinguishes the two from one another through details in the structure of the flowers. A phylogenetic examination is not available.
