Lisa Monaco

Lisa Oudens Monaco (* 25. February 1968 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American lawyer and was from March 2013 to January 2017 President Obama's adviser on homeland security ( United States Homeland Security Advisor ).

Life

Monaco grew up in Newton and graduated from Winsor School (graduation 1987). She then studied American history and literature at Harvard University , where she received her Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude in 1990 . After graduating, she worked briefly at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and for the Health Care Advisory Board . From 1992 she was research coordinator for the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary ; In 1994 she began the law program at the University of Chicago Law School , which she received in 1997 with the Juris Doctorcompleted. In 1998 she was admitted to the New York City Bar Association .

She then worked for Justice Secretary Janet Reno until 2001 . After that she was a prosecutor; also commissioned with the Enron case . She then worked for the then FBI director Robert Mueller .

In 2009, United States Deputy Attorney General David W. Ogden appointed her Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General . When Ogden left office in February 2010, Monaco was appointed Assistant Attorney General for National Security by President Obama ; as such, she directed major anti-terror and espionage cases in the US Department of Justice and approved the use of FISA resolutions. Monaco is also intimately familiar with the difficulties of closing the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base detention center .

When John O. Brennan was appointed Director of the Central Intelligence Agency in 2013 , Monaco took over his previous role as Homeland Security Advisor.
