List of public fountains and washing places in Pernes-les-Fontaines

history
As in many villages in Provence , wells were an integral part of life in Pernes. The discovery of the St. Roch spring in the 18th century made it possible to transport water to every quarter of the city, thus protecting the population from drought . To celebrate this event, the municipality had four monumental fountains built: the Fontaine du Cormoran , the Fontaine du Gigot , the Fontaine Reboul and the Fontaine de l'Hôpital . Today there are no fewer than 40 public fountains and about a hundred private fountains hidden in numerous gardens and courtyards of villas and other private houses. In 1936 Pernes was renamed Pernes-les-Fontaines because of its numerous fountains.

The middle part is decorated with a sun, the coat of arms of the city, on two sides the motto of Pernes Dei gratia inter alia lucet (“by the grace of God it shines among all”). The fountain got its name from the cormorant that crowns it. It rests on a ball with outspread wings and a fish in its beak and symbolizes the city.
