List of Mayors of Spremberg

Spremberg coat of arms

On this page the mayors of Spremberg are listed by name and term of office.

For Niederlausitz, and thus also for Spremberg , it was not customary to mention mayors until the middle of the 14th century . The first mention of a mayor (Ratskür) for Spremberg took place in 1397. The council represents the highest administrative body of the city. It exercised sovereignty over city finances, police force and voluntary jurisdiction. Furthermore, the city elders were involved in the exercise of the city administration. These four to five city elders were in turn elected by the council members from the local citizenry.

The mayor was elected annually from among the councilors elected for life. At that time, the city tour consisted of five members of the Senate and three mayors. According to their position, these were the first mayor - the Consul Regens, the second mayor - the Pro Consul and the third mayor - the Consul.

At that time there was no stipulation of how often one of the annually elected mayors could be re-elected. If the incumbent mayor was not re-elected, he automatically returned to the Senate.
