Bärnau

Ensemble old town Bärnau

File number E-3-77-112-1

The ensemble encompasses the medieval town plan including moat and walls with the buildings that were largely renewed after the town fires of 1839 and 1869.

The ground plan of the city center, located on a flat hilltop, corresponds to an oval with a longitudinal street market as the center. Bärnau, located on the Goldstrasse to Bohemia, was granted town and market rights by Ludwig the Bavarian as early as 1343 and was once again privileged by Emperor Charles IV .

The reconstruction after 1839 and 1869 shaped the town's squares and streets with its two-storey, eaves-sided farm and craftsman's houses, which are only separated from each other by fire walls. The parish church of St. Nicholas, which was rebuilt after the fire of 1808, protrudes from the uniformity of the plastered bourgeois buildings with their round-arched, often framed gateways. On the market square, the palais-like town hall from 1898 sets an elegant urban accent.

City fortifications

File number D-3-77-112-48

The former city wall with reinforced gate openings and a rectangular tower in the southwest was built soon after the city charter was granted in 1343, was partially rebuilt in 1622, and from the 19th century onwards it increasingly fell into disrepair.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
