Nona Gaprindashvili was the first woman to be appointed grandmaster in 1978 .

The list of International Masters of 1962 lists all chess players who received the title of International Masters in 1962 from the World Chess Federation FIDE .

In December 2017, Nona Gaprindaschwili , Vlastimil Hort , Kick Langeweg and Burkhard Malich were four of the 15 players who were honored at the time. Seven of the 15 players later achieved the title of grandmaster (including Nona Gaprindashvili, the first woman to be awarded this title), another two players were later awarded the title of honorary grandmaster . Nona Gaprindashvili was also awarded the newly created title of Grand Master of Women in 1976 .

Legend

The table contains the following information:

  • Name : gives the name of the player.
  • Country : The country for which the player was eligible to play in 1962.
  • Life data : states the year of birth and, if applicable, the year of death of the player.
  • GM : Indicates the year of award for players who were later promoted to grandmasters.
  • HGM : Indicates the year of the award for players who were later made Honorary Grand Masters.
  • Other associations : For players who were sooner or later eligible to play for at least one other association, this indicates these associations with the periods of eligibility to play (if known). Changes to a direct successor state are not taken into account.
